Candidate Bill Clinton's Letter Promising
'Aggressive' Obscenity Law Enforcement

Following is a text of a letter, written on Clinton/Gore '92 Committee stationery, signed by Bill Clinton, and addressed to Betty Wein (now deceased), who was at the time Senior Editor of Morality in Media, Inc. and Editor of The Morality in Media Newsletter.

Dear Mrs. Wein:

Thank you for your letter calling my attention to your organization's effort on the White Ribbon Campaign. I also appreciate your sharing with me your support for aggressive enforcement of federal obscenity laws.

Like most parents, Hillary and I are concerned about the effects of exposure to violence, explicit sex, and mixed moral messages on America's children-themes all too often depicted on television, on films, and in print

During my entire life as a public official, I have worked on policies to strengthen the family. Hillary has worked for twenty years to prevent the abuse and neglect of our country's children. Be assured that aggressive enforcement of federal obscenity laws-particularly by the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section-will be a priority in a Clinton-Gore administration.

While I believe that publicly funded projects should strive to reflect the values that most Americans share, we must respect and defend freedom of speech and artistic expression.

We Americans are a diverse people, but we will rise and fall together. Hillary and I, along with Al and Tipper Gore, are doing our best to move America in the right direction.

Thank you again for writing. Your support-all the way to November-is urgently needed and deeply appreciated.

Sincerely
(signature)
Bill Clinton
